Over 50% of pupils failed Maths

Tuesday, May 20, 2014 – MORE than half of students at 11 schools failed Mathematics in their first assessment before sitting for their Primary School Assessment (PSR) public examination this year.

Out of 765 pupils at Brunei-Muara Zone III, only 42.88 per cent passed the subject, statistics from the Ministry of Education showed. Acting Assistant Director of Primary Education Section Nudin Hj Mohammad said Mathematics was identified as the most difficult subject for Zone III Brunei primary school students to pass. In addition, 293 students failed Science in the first assessment.

The acting assistant director was speaking during a sharing session with teachers on the analysis of assessment results at Rimba II Primary School. He urged teachers to think and act strategically, while providing his suggestions and strategies to improve the passing rate. There is a need to identify students who require immediate attention in their academic performances, he said. “This is the most important. Students who obtained grades D and U need teachers’ attention because even though the students’ grade is D, (they) are not safe as they can still fail,” he noted. – The Brunei Times
